Monday 16th March – travel and walks - ***** - cloudy with a touch of drizzle.

Our first night in the van went well, so quiet but woke fairly early around 6, sadly yesterday’s sunshine had been replaced with cloud. I did have a quick walk down to the Lac before our porridge and then drive to Mesil St. Peire for a quick walk along the breakwater which was no wear near as good as yesterday with a cool breeze blowing! Then with the direction finder set on Mags Mobile, we found our way back to the toll motorway just below Troys and were soon bombing along. I then spotted a sign to a huge Viaduct a short distance away at Chaumont and had visions of some Roman masterpiece so decided to make a small detour, although the Viaduct was impressive it carried a train track so was not so old. There was a footpath right across it which looked interesting and after having trouble finding it we discovered it was long closed! Still never mind it was a bit of fun and we were able to top up the van with diesel at an expensive 1.86 Euros, that pratt Trump has a lot to answer for, the sooner he is locked up in the prison cell the better the world will be!!! Back to the toll road to Dijon followed by Dole before coming off the toll and stopping at Poligny pretty much the gateway to the Jura with some impressive lumps in front of us! We were heading for a mountain river we visited with our boys several years ago but with a couple of road closures we had an interesting afternoon driving around, the scenery was stunning, we passed loads of vineyards and even spotted half a dozen chamois grazing in a field:) Then after passing a couple of Lacs we reached the large car park for the Cascades du Herrisson which being out of session was free! Apparently, there are 7 cascades to see as we set off on our walk at 3.30 and soon saw the amazing fast flowing mountain stream surrounded by moss covered trees just stunning and hardly anyone here too! Then just around the corner was a massive waterfall crashing noisily down, a real pinch yourself moment! The footpath continued up steps and slopes to the to of the fall which was amazing too, we decided to continue, past two fisherman spinning for trout and saw another amazing huge waterfall and decided to head to the top of that one two which was a hard climb for two old people, a real scramble at times over slippery rocks but we made and were now very high above the stream below. We continued for 5 minutes to find a smaller waterfall which feed a small basin and we lucky enough to spot two dippers fishing in the water, just brilliant, that was certainly the icing on the cake and all we had to do now was walk back down to the van which was pretty knackering and made those old legs ache for sure!!! We decided to stay here in the car park; it is once again so quiet and we have it all to ourselves. The van was soon ready for the night with another bag of frozen goody’s cooking, the sky even cleared briefly at sunset to turn red, I think it will be another early night before we go in search of some snow tomorrow, its just brilliant to be back in the mountains, definitely our happy place!
